3. Golf News of the Week
It is with sadness we report the lost one of our greatest Legends of Australian Golf and an Immortal of the Australian PGA in the passing of Peter Thomson AO, CBE

His Memorial was held on Thursday, June 28th at the Melbourne Cricket Club and it was a celebration of his life where many gathered to show their respects for this great man, not only in golf but across many areas of life.

In a message from his family, Brendan Moloney shares:

The first Australian to win the British Open went on to secure the title five times between 1954 and 1965, a record equaled in the 20th and 21st Centuries only by American Tom Watson.

On the American senior circuit, he won nine times in 1985, setting a record that may never be broken. As well as a great player he was an outstanding contributor to the game, serving as president of the Australian PGA for 32 years, designing and building courses in Australia and around the world, helping establish the Asian Tour and working behind the scenes for the Odyssey House drug rehabilitation organisation where he was chairman for five years. He also wrote for newspapers and magazines for more than 60 years and was the patron of the Australian Golf Writers Association.

In 1979 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his service to golf and in 2001 became an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his contributions as a player and administrator and for community service.

Peter is survived by his wife Mary, son Andrew and daughters Deirdre Baker, Pan Prendergast and Fiona Stanway, their spouses, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

My experiences with Peter Thomson are very special to me and many other PGA Professionals that either played the Tour or worked in the golf industry as Club Professionals and Teachers.

I first met Peter as a 20-year-old Assistant Professional at Victoria Golf Club where Peter was the Playing Professional and Lifetime Member. I had the honor to play with him on too few occasions but I will always remember the first 2 rounds of the 1976 Australian PGA at Rosebud Country Club where we played the first 2 rounds together alongside Alan Cooper.

As Professional at Sorrento Golf Club in the early 1980’s, I had more time to see him at close hand as he and his family spent their Christmas holidays at Portsea. This is where Ian Bakerfinch gained much insight into how to play links golf and Peter shared his wisdom freely with Ian and other rising stars who he thought might take his words to heart.

7. History of Golf
Golf in America: In December 1650, the settlers of Fort Orange (near present-day Albany, New York) played the first recorded round of kolf(golf) in America. The Dutch settlers played kolf year round. During the spring, summer and fall it was played in fields. In the winter it was played on ice with the same rules. Then on December 10, 1659,the ruler passed an ordinance against playing golf in the streets of the same city.
