THE BACKSWING TO THE TOP
(The Illusion is the Confusion)
Following on from the April Edition instruction article on the pivot, we now need to train the hands and arms to make the backswing.
A big mistake that many golfers tend to make when they start the backswing is to actively pull the club back with their right hand and arm. This causes the arms to move across the chest in the backswing and starts the swing on the wrong path and out of sequence.
In the Croker Golf System we are putting emphasis on how the hands push causing the hips to rotate early in the backswing. This allows the shoulders to go along for the ride from the start and then the swinging club-head hinges the wrists – causing the right wrist to bend back and the right elbow to bend in and down.
This “slinging” action winds up the left hand and arm, promoting structure and coil in the backswing. This helps maintain the hands and arms in a swinging motion in front of the chest as you turn back, coiling the hips, the wrists, the arms, and the shoulders.
This way, the hands and arms and club remain more in front of the chest and in front of the trunk of the body in the backswing
This will allow the transition from backswing to downswing for the hands, arms and club to have more room to SWING down and out on the right path into and through the ball.

Remember, the illusion can be a confusion. The hands and arms do not move back and across the body in the backswing or in the downswing, but remain more in front of the body from start to finish when combined with pivot power!

Push the Right Hand Bent Drill
Purpose
To groove in how your hands and arms work in the backswing.
Training Emphasis
Learn how to build the feel of your right hand pushing out in front of your body in the actual backswing.
Feel the elbows work together and point down at their respective hips.
You do not pull your hands “up” or “across” your body. When working on the backswing do the drill 3 – 5 times and then hit the ball.
Hit at least 60 shots repeating this process.
Exercise
Assume the 3 point set stance with a club.
Pushing your right-hand bent will provide the impetus (momentum) to reach the following aligned position (do not allow your hips or shoulders to turn):
1. Your hands will reach just under right shoulder height and to the inside of your right shoulder.
2. There is no right wrist cock up. The right wrist will be pushed bent and will rotate clockwise slightly. This causes
the right elbow to point down and in front of the right hip.
3. The club shaft is in a vertical plane and leaning away from the target about 45 degrees.
4. The left wrist is cocked and pushed bent.
5. The left wrist is rotated clockwise and wound into the right hand.
