Lessons of the Week
Hitting Down on the Golf Ball
With all iron shots, the aim is to hit “down” and compress the ball into the ground.
This occurs at a lesser or greater degree depending on the length of the shot and the loft of the club you are playing.
With more lofted irons, you do better when hitting more down.
With the driver off the tee, you will be striking the ball when the clubhead is moving slightly up and in – however, the face of the driver is still striking the golf ball below the equator.
Correctly fitted irons for lie and shaft stiffness is a key issue when making solid compression on the ball.
